Bonsai Trees Information
Bonsai trees (miniature replicas of larger trees) have been a source of beauty and awe in private gardens and public arboretums for centuries. There was always such variety in sizes and styles that I was completely enthralled by the age of ten. But creating my own trees seemed unattainable until I started looking for information and learning what it takes to create a Bonsai tree. In those days, information was not easy to find and a local expert/mentor was not easily found in the Midwest. Today, computers and the Internet make access to information on Bonsai trees easy to locate, but talking to someone (in online forums or locally, or finding a local grower) who has experience growing Bonsai trees is the best way to learn. So, I created this website to act as a single point of reference whether you want to learn to create Bonsai trees yourself or purchase one from a grower. Below is a brief introduction to what I feel are the important aspects to Bonsai growing that you should know before you get started.
Simply put, Creating Bonsai Trees is the Japanese (ç›†æ ½) art of growing trees, or woody plants shaped as trees, in containers. “Bonsai” is actually two words, "Bon", and "Sai". The word "Bon" means "tray" and "Sai", "growing" or "planting". Therefore, the two words put together give you the translation of "tray growing" or "tray planting".
Bonsai uses cultivation techniques (i.e. pruning, root reduction, potting, defoliation, grafting, etc…) to produce small trees that mimic the shape and style of mature, full-sized trees. The word “Bonsai” is a Japanese pronunciation of the earlier Chinese term Penzai. In addition “Bonsai” is sometimes used as an umbrella term for all miniature trees in containers or pots. Similar practices in other cultures include the Chinese tradition of Penjing and the miniature living landscapes of Vietnamese hòn non bá»™.
